Not exaclty the kind of shocking news you’ll expect:
Yesterday, there was a big thunder storm in Austin. I was at work during it and it didn’t seemed too bad. When I got home, I sat in front of the TV and suddenly noticed that it was smelling like an electrical component was burning. I got closer to the TV and the smell got stronger. It was my AIWA amplifier! I turned it on, but it wasn’t generating any sound. Then I figured that my internet router probably went down during the storm, so I go and check it and both the cable modem and the router where off and the plate that covers the electrical outlet broke in pieces… damn!
Then I try to open the garage door: guess what? doesn’t open either! fuck!
Then I start feeling a bit warm, but noticed that the AC compressor outside was working. So I get closer to the vent that sucks the air and feel no sucking at all. This is too much! the internal AC fan seems to be broken as well! Crap!!!!
Finally I walk close to the subwoofer, and notice the power light is off… shit! is dead too!
I already went to time warner and exchanged the cable modem. Also called the AC repair guys and they can only help me next monday. I hope they fix it as part of the warranty. If not, I’ll have to call the home insurance to see if they cover all the stuff that got fried on friday!
To make things worse: It is saturday and I’m at work doing testing for a go-live installation.
UPDATE
Cable modem
Replaced it with a new one at Time Warner for no cost (you already knew that), but the new modem didn’t worked. Today the TW technician went to my place and fixed the cable. The cable and the filter were fried too.

Wireless router
Looked for the Airport Express and you could get one for about $100. Then I looked at dealmac.com and found an offer for another Linksys router for $35 (after 10% discount + $10 mail-in rebate) . Airport Express is a nice gadget, but I don’t think I need one. The router is on its way.

AC
After surviving the weekend without AC, finally a technician went to my home today and fixed it. The controller board and the motor controller were both replaced. The pieces were under warranty but they charged me $224 for the labor. 🙁

Garage Door
Went to Home Depot and a nice model costs $150 + $100 for installation. 🙁

Receiver and Subwoofer (and DVD player maybe)
The receiver and the subwoofer both died. The DVD player seems to work, but I could not operate it with the remote. I think the infrared receiver is broken. Unfortunately, many features can only be set using the control. If that’s the case, I’ll probably have to replace the DVD player too.
Cost: Receiver ($150), subwoofer ($70), DVD player ($100)
Total estimated loss: $829 🙁
Second Update
Last night a bought a new receiver. It is a very nice one that Cetrulo recommended me. The brand is Onkyo and the model is TX-LR552(S). According to Cetrulo it uses a very good digital amplifier from Tripath.
The best part is that the receiver was on sale at Frys. It’s price tag was $399, but I only payed $149!

This is the perfect excuse to buy yourself a nice new Airport Express as a replacement to your dead router.
Daniel: primero que todo me alegra que estés bien y no te haya pasado nada durante la tormenta. Te cuento que la semana pasada experimente algo parecido a lo que te sucedió a ti.
El miércoles 27 de julio del 2005 estábamos experimentando en el estado de Maryland una tormenta tremenda. Yo venia manejando del trabajo hacia la casa y veia que la tormenta se veía venir en cualquier momento, pero guardaba la esperanza de que no me cogiera en el camino. Así fue, estuve superdebuenas ya que en el instante que cuadre el carro al frente de la casa se desato la tormenta, entonces corrí rápidamente a la casa y logre entrar con tan solo un par de gotas sobre los hombros, entonces le dije a la negra que había estado muy debuenas y no me había mojado nada. Salude a Lorenzo únicamente ya que juanita estaba dormida. Mientras la negra cargaba a Lorenzo junto a la ventana que da al patio y yo detrás de ella no dedicamos a ver el torrencial aguacero con muchos rayos y truenos. No habían pasado 5 minutos desde mi llegada cuando oímos un estallido y un estruendo muy fuerte. Como estábamos mirando por la ventana no vimos nada sospechoso en las casa de los vecinos, entonces corrí a abrir la puerta y para sorpresa me encuentro un reguero de ladrillos en toda la entrada de la casa. Como loco salgo y me doy cuenta que los ladrillos venían de nuestra chimenea, había ladrillos por todas partes. Luego corrí al otro lado de la calle para fijarme en el techo y lo vi cubierto de ladrillo, entonces sin perder un segundo y como loco corrí hacia la casa, entre a mil y subí al ático donde me encuentro que uno de los ladrillos habían hecho un hueco en el techo (el cual había cambiado en Septiembre del 2004) y se me estaba entrando el agua. En cuestión de segundos la negra trajo una caneca plástica para recoger el agua mientras yo buscaba algo para tapar el hueco. Finalmente logre conseguir unas tablas y parchar el hueco temporalmente y parar el 90% del agua.
La Negra, mientras tanto llamaba a los bomberos ya que había muchos ladrillos sueltos de la chimenea y se podían caer en cualquier instante. Después de 20 minutos aproximadamente llegaron lo bomberos y terminaron de tumbar los ladrillos mas sueltos, también me taparon la chimenea con un platico para evitar penetración de agua pero después de verme la cara de desconsuelo. También me revisaron todos los circuitos eléctricos y escanearon la casa para detectar fuegos escondidos. Por suerte no había ninguno. Los bomberos se fueron y los vecinos empezaron a salir de sus casas para ver lo sucedido. Entre comentarios y comentarios me di cuenta que uno de los vecinos tenia una escalera suficientemente larga para subirme al techo y poder hacer un arreglo temporal y así parar la penetración de agua hacia el ático 100%. Una hora más tarde todo estaba en calma, la casa estaba sellada de entradas de agua y los rayos del sol estaban saliendo de nuevo y yo ensopado a más no poder. Luego empezamos a llamar al seguro y a tomar fotos para documentar lo sucedido. Al día siguiente me dedique a conseguir estimados de los arreglos para mandarle a la aseguradora. Techo: 475.00$, Chimenea 3,750.00$ y otra compañía lo hacia todo por 9,400.00$. Hasta el sol de hoy estoy esperando por la compañía de seguros que mande a un estimador a mi casa y verifique los danos. A todos estos danos se le suma que el árbol al frente de mi casa hay que tumbarlo ya que el rayo cayo allí y tiene una rajadura de 10 pies aproximadamente.
Lo mejor de toda esta historia y la tuya es que estamos vivos y coleando y con ganas de seguir adelante. También te quiero decir, si no lo has hecho antes de que contactes la compañía de seguros y hagas el reclamo.

Creo que tu historia está más trágica que la mia, pero como dices, lo importante es que todos estamos bien. Desafortunadamente, mi deducible del seguro es de $1000 así que no justifica hacer el reclamo. Igual me interesa contratar un electricista que revise mi casa y asegurarme de que el sistema electrico esta en buenas condiciones. Saludos!
Daniel: tienes razon, no justifica hacer el reclamo si la reparacion es menor que el deductible. en mi caso el deductible es de 500$. seguimos en contacto. dejense ver por estos lados algun dia.
