Review of the flickr to blog functionality
Pros

  • Easy one-step way of posting pictures in my blog.

Cons

  • Picture size goes from 500px to 250px. As you can see 500px is too large for WordPress (perfect size is 400px) and 250px will be too small. Now I know why they do this: its because those are the default sizes for Small and Medium in flickr (click on a picture, and then click on the All Sizes option above it).
  • No way to categorize the post from flickr

Almendra: A rare acquisition

Last weekend was labor day holiday and usually different stores arrange sales. Half Price Books one of my favorite stores in Austin had all its inventory with 20% discount. This store carries used books, cds, dvds and even lps and tapes.

First I went to the photography books section and got my self a really good photography book that is currently in its 9th edition and sells for $84 at amazon. I payed $14 for the 7th edition. I also bought a smaller book called How to Photograph People for $3.

Then I went to the foreign language books and got my self two books in spanish Rumbo a la libertad y Halcones de la noche each for less than $5.

After that I went to check the music and decided to buy some Opera, so I grabbed Carmina Burana and a compilation of songs by Puccini and Verdi.

Finally and this is the most interesting part of my Half Price Books adventure I was looking at the international artists section and I found a cd from Almendra.

Almendra

This is an argentinian rock band from the 60′s and Luis Alberto Spinetta was part of it. The cd includes the album “Almendra”, plus some singles. I think this is an album that you will even have trouble buying in Argentina, so the fact that the cd is in Austin is really intriguing. How the hell this cd got here? I’m probably never going to found out, but it is interesting to think about it. Maybe I should do something similar: sale my Cuarto Acto cd from Estados Alterados or Shampoo from Calle Silvestre, hide a note inside the cd cover and ask the new owner to contact me and describe what he thinks about finding a very rare album from Colombia in Austin.

Smile to my new Nikon D40x

Back in 2004 I bought myself a very small and nice digital camera Pentax Optio S4i as you probably already knew. For 3 years I’ve been taking lots of pictures and having lots of fun with my camera, but over this past 3 years I also realized how point and shot cameras are very limited and how SRL cameras can take gorgeous pictures. Photography slowly grew in me as a hobbie and I started getting interested more in the subject. Seeing the amazing collections of pictures available at flickr or looking at the pictures taken by friends like Johnny Kings or Niv was definately a motivator.

Nikon D40x

Anyway, thats a long introduction to tell you that I just purchased a new Nikon D40x digital camera with a 18-135mm lens and I’m really excited to learn more about photography!

Puerto Escondido

I can only describe this amazing trip to Puerto Escondido to Eva and Niv’s wedding in spanish.

Statue of Liberty, New York

For the 4th of July weekend me and four friends (Alejandro, Andres, Luis and Raffaele) decided to go to New York city. We bought tickets with American and flu on wednesday with one stop at Raleigh (NC). We stayed at the Howard Johnson located in SoHo (Manhattan) and it was a good choice: cheap hotel with a great location.

The first night we had dinner at a Peruvian restaurant and then went bar hoping. Bars close at 4am in the morning in NYC so you get to visit many bars and drink many beers. That night my sister calls me and tells me that she is coming to NYC too!

The next day we walked around Chinatown, Little Italy, Central Park, 5th Avenue and Times Square, and latter that night I went out with Luis and with Luvi’s sister Erika. Luvi is a friend from my sister that I never got to meet personally.

Times Square, New York

On friday my sister joined us and we took a ferry to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Then we walked around Wall Street, World Trade Center and TriBeCa. Later that night Luis’s friends Pachito, Jorge and Victor joined us at a club where Ana Maria, Isaac and her sister Maria Victoria joined us too.

On Saturday we went to Broadway st. to buy tickets for Les Miserables. Then we did more walking and visited the Apple store at SoHo, the toy store FAO, the Disney Store and then we went to see Les Mis show which was a very pleasant surprise. After that we had dinner at Little Italy and went early to bed… at 2am!

Central Park, New York

On sunday we were able to wake up at 9am and we split appart. I visited the MOMA museum and Greenwich Village with Alejandro, while Andres, Raffaele and Ana Maria visited the American Museum of Natural History. Later that night we went bar hoping again until 4am.

Monday was our last day at NYC. We had breakfast and took the Metro to La Guardia airport. The flight stopped again at Raleigh and Alejandro, Luis and my self almost missed the flight to Austin. They had already boarded everyone and closed the doors, and because Raffaele was inside the plane, we were able to call him and ask him to tell the flight attendants to let us in. It would have been really sucky if we had missed the flight.

Let the pictures tell the story all over again.

Volver

Volver,
con la frente marchita,
las nieves del tiempo
platearon mi sien.

Sentir, que es un soplo la vida,
que veinte años no es nada,
que febril la mirada…

Ok, lets not be drama queens: coming back to Medellín after less than one an a half years is not as dramatic as Carlos Gardel´s tango “Volver”. But I felt like singing and as a free piece of knowledge for today, let me tell you that Gardel died in Medellín when his plane crashed back in 1935.

This trip to Medellín has been great: I’ve been able to see family and friends. I had visited towns around the city that I hadnt visited since I moved to Austin. I got to be at Paola’s wedding at Fizebad and met her family and friends. And I got to show my hometown to my non-colombian friends which I believe left this country with a great impression.

As always pictures are worth a thousand words.

Check also Vanessa’s pictures and Paola’s pictures (ceremony and party).

No better way to end this post with a very paisa style phrase: Medellín es una chimba parce!

SXSW 2007

SXSW festival is back. We’ve been going to the SXSW concerts for the past few years. Molotov, Plastilina Mosh, Andrea Echeverri, Control Machete, Jumbo, are just a few of the many bands that I’ve got to see.

This year I went to see the wednesday show at Opal Divines with a good performance by La Gusana Ciega. But the band I was really looking forward this year was Los Abandoned.

I saw this band for the first time when they performed with Molotov at Stubbs back in 2005 and I really liked them. Since then I’ve been following them and I’ve been wanting to buy their album.

Los Abandoned performed last night at Bar Rio and they put a great show. I took some pictures and even recorded a small video and some live audio that I’ll share later.

After the show the band members hanged with the crowd. I approached Lady P and had a short conversation with her and took a couple of pictures with her. She was really cool. I also asked Vira Lata (bass player) if they brought some albums for sale and he told me that they forgot but that I could get it from Waterloo Records. I know this album has been on iTunes Music Store for a while, but I want to have a physical copy of the CD.

After Los Abandoned, the Instituto Mexicano De Sonido performed with Alejandro Rosso from Plastilina Mosh. They put a great show with lots of energy. Pretty cool!

Tonight there are several options of bands to see like The Presidents of the USA, Bowling for Soup or Balkan Beat Box.

Christmas in Albany

My trip to Albany was very fun. It was nice to see my sister and to meet all her friends. We spent the 24th at Fernando’s house eating Ajiaco, drinking Aguardiente and dancing vallenatos, salsas and porros which made the night very colombian-style.

I forgot to bring my camera but my sister took some pictures.
