Juanes at the Austin City Limits

When I went to the ACL live taping of Cafe Tacvba, I thought: “This is amazing and it is probably not going to happen again anymore”… well I just got back from seeing the ACL live tapping of Juanes. He is performing live tonight at the Bass Concert Hall and I didn’t got tickets to see him, but instead I got a ticket to see him at ACL. Thanks to Daniela, Miriam and Karen who stayed in line for hours to get the free tickets!

I was wearing my Colombian National Soccer Team jersey, my “Aguadas” hat (the one I bought from El Putas) and I brought the Colombian flag I hang in my living room at home.

I gave the flag to the girls for the concert and Miriam actually got up in the stage, covered Juanes with the flag, hugged and kissed him!

Some other girls had very bad timing and tried to hug Juanes in the middle of a song, and he had to stop and repeat a couple of songs because of this.

Anyway, it was a very cool concert. Thanks ACL!

Update – 02/18/06 0:37
I just got back from Juanes concert in the Bass Concert Hall. I got a last minute ticket for free so I was able to go to the concert. I enjoyed more the ACL concert, but this one was very good as well. The place was packed with girls which never stopped screaming in a very high pitch…

The best song he played was “Fijate Bien” from an album that has the same name and that was released in 2000. The interesting thing is that no one singed that song, so it was kind of a private moment between him and the people who knows him from the very beggining.

Playing along with NIN!

This weekend I borrowed my friend’s (Gustavo) mixer and mic and setup a mini recording studio in my bedroom where I keep my drumset. Then I recorded myself playing drums in the Nine Inch Nails song ‘The hand that feeds’, using the GarageBand file I downloaded a few months ago.

I only spent a few hours doing this. Keep in mind that I am a begginer drummer. But at the end I’m happy with the result. Here are the files I created:

1. Replaced voice and drums. (I sing horrible, but the drums are nice)
2. Replaced drums, added Mice effect to Trent’s voice, added Helium effect to my voice. (Funny!)
3. Only the drums, so you can really hear what I did. (Drums begin after 18 seconds)

NIN fuckin’ rocks!

Nine Inch Nails at San Antonio Poster
I was very dissapointed that I missed Nine Inch Nails’ concert at Austin a couple of months ago. I heard about the concert too late and no tickets were available. So when I heard that they were coming to San Antonio (SBC Center), I got all excited about it.

I asked my friends and only Gustavo was interested in the concert. We decided to not buy the tickets on TicketMaster, but instead try to find them on eBay. Probably somebody won’t be able to go to the concert and he would have to sell his tickets.

We waited until the last minute and it payed off! We got tickets in a good location for a price below TicketMaster.

About the concert

It was so fucking good! Probably one of the best concerts I’ve ever been. Trent and the whole band were super-charged with energy! They played many songs from their latests album With Teeth and that was a bummer since I only started listening to the album last friday, so I was not very familiar with the songs and lyrics. I’ve heard The hand that feeds before when they released the single in GarageBand format and I’ve heard Only in the radio.

They also played songs from previous albums:
- Terrible Lie
- March of pigs
- Closer
- Hurt
- Wish
- The Frail
- The Wretched
- Suck

They closed with Head like a hole and when the song was over they trowed and destroyed the instruments!

Pictures

There was a sign outside the venue saying that cameras were not allowed so I went back the leave mine in the car. I could probably had sneaked it in, but I didn’t tried. So I don’t have pictures from the concert. I just found some on flickr that someone took with a cellphone so don’t expect good quality.

Queens of the Stone Age

NIN had two bands opening the concert. One of them was Queens of the Stone Age. I knew this band and I knew they were good, and they did not dissapointed me. The drummer was awesome. I think I want to practice a few of their songs in my drum set. Unfortunaly their sound wasn’t very well set up. Lots off echoes and you could bearly hear the lead singer voice. But they put a great show.

My sister and I headed to the festival around noon. We parked on Trinity and 17th street and walked to 14th street to take the shuttle. There was no line. We go to the park and the ‘Will Call’ process to claim the tickets was quick and easy. Then we rushed to see Aterciopelados playing and guess what? They cancelled, last minute… So we went to see Maneja Beto, a local band that plays Mexican music with a rock style.

After that we had lunch under the shadow of a tree. The heat was horrible: 40oC in September is crazy! Record temperature for ACL.

Then we checked a band called Bukka Allen which was ok. We stayed there mostly because the stage had a nice shadowed area.

Then we listened for a little bit this women Ruthie Foster. Her music was mostly gospel and she started singing ‘church’ music, so we left very quickly.

After that we took a break and then we met with the rest of the gang: Alejandro del Castillo, Marcos, the Correa family, Midori, Alma, among others. We also checked out Ricardo Lemvo & Makina loca, a salsa band that played really good.

Then we went to the stage where Franz Ferdinand and Coldplay were going to perform to get a good spot, which didn’t really happen. We were very far from the stage, so when Coldplay started playing I went on my own and got as far as I could to the stage. I could barely see the stage, but at least the sound was much better in that spot. Coldplay was awesome. Live, they sound better than when you heard them from a CD. The show was amazing and they played their best songs: In my place, God put a smile upon your face, The Scientist, Fix You…

Coldplay - Yellow - Austin City Limits 2005

The best part was when they started playing Yellow and they released about 20 big yellow balloons filled with little gold pieces of paper. It was so cool.

Finally we had to wait a long time to leave the park because of the huge amount of people (the Colplay singer mentioned that we were 60.000 people!).

The heat, the dust, the lines at the end: it was all worth it.

El que no brinque, el que no salte es: Puto!

After Carlos Vives‘ concert on friday and playing soccer at noon on sunday I was exhausted. But you think that will stop me from going to Molotov‘s concert at Stubb’s?

No way José!

I went to the concert with my sister, Alejandro, Raffaele, Gustavo and his buddies from Guadalajara.

As always (this is my 3rd Molotov’s concert) they put a lot of humor and energy at the concert and I enjoyed every bit of it. I’ll post some pictures later today.

The coolest things they did, was playing the song ‘Eye of the tiger’ from Survivor with the lyrics of Gimme tha Power…

As a side note, the chilean/LA band Los Abandoned opened the concert for Molotov. I’ve never heard them before but I liked their music which sounds similar to Elastica. The lead singer is a very sexy girl with lots of energy and good vibe.

Carlos Vives at San Antonio

Carlos Vives and La Provincia playing La Celosa like a papayera.

This friday I went to see Carlos Vives in concert at Sunset Station in San Antonio. I went with my sister, Sandrita, Juan Fernando, Nestor Ceron, Claudia, Paula and Leslie. I also met a lot of people I know over there like Alejandro Asenjo or Andrés Salvador. The place wasn’t too crawded, about 100o people, mostly from Colombia, Venezuela, Peru and México.

I saw lots of colombian soccer jerseys (national team, junior, union magdalena), lots of ‘sombrero vueltiao’ and lots of colombian flags.

So lets talk about the concert. It was amazing. Vives and La Provincia gave it all in the stage. They sing for about 2 hours, mixing the songs from the new album with some oldies. The song I enjoyed the most was ‘La Celosa’ when the band got toghether in front of the stage, and performed as a ‘papayera’ group. It was awesome. Some of the songs they played were:

- Fruta fresca
- Carito
- Voy a olvidarme de mi
- Como tu
- Que tiene la noche
- La fuerza del amor
- El rock de mi pueblo
- El amor de mi tierra
- Déjame entrar
- Que diera
- La celosa
- La gota fria
- El duro el original
- Pa’ Mayte

Check my pictures here. Also check this set of pictures a guy posted on flickr. They are very good pics.

Coffee Overdose

I just got back from a concert of Café Tacuba at the studio where the Austin City Limits tv show is recorded. This program has been showing life music performances from different bands for 30 years.

It was a private (and free) show for about 300 lucky people that even got invited (not my case) or made a long line (that’s me!).

Café Tacuba - Austin City Limits

This is the second time I see Tacuba in concert. About a year ago, they performed at La Zona Rosa with Control Machete and Ely Guerra.

And you think that is enough Tacuba?

You are wrong. I’m going to see Tacuba again tomorrow at Stubbs!

I love the Live Music Capital of the World

UPDATE
Just got back from the second concert at Stubbs… just fucking amazing!

“No me hubieras dejado esa noche… porque esa misma noche encontré un amor”

Trent Reznor rocks!

In case you had better things to do last Saturday evening and did not checked on Slashdot, let me tell you that Trent Reznor, the brain behind Nine Inch Nails, one of my favorite bands, just released the new single from NIN's upcoming album as a GarageBand file for fan remixes.

GarageBand is an application developed by Apple and shipped with every new computer sold, that lets you easily perform, record and create your own music. Whether youre an experienced or aspiring musician.

This means that Trent Reznor is allowing millions of people to play around with his music and create new mixes of his song 'The hand that feeds'.

I think this is fucking genius!

For the record, I downloaded the GarageBand file and tried to play it in my new PowerBook. However my laptop only came with 256MB of RAM and GarageBand couldn't play the file. Immediatly I went to the web and purchased 512MB that I found at dealram.com for a very low price. I bought generic brand memory for half of the price of a branded one. Yes branded memory has a lifetime warranty, but I'm not paying twice as much for that. Even so, the generic memory I bought does have a brand and lifetime warranty (supposedly…).

Plastilina Mosh and Andrea Echeverri at SXSW

Last night I went to see Plastilina Mosh and Andrea Echeverri at Mambo King's during the SXSW 2005 music festival. The concert was great, and we were able to stand right next to the bands. I saw Plastilina last year for SXSW 2004. This time they brought 3 musicians that added a lot of energy and good vibe to the concert.

The cool thing is that I made it in one of the pictures (#28) that a photographer from the Austin American-Statement newspaper took.

The only bad thing was the fact that we had to wait in line 1 hour because the people at Mambo King's were idiots.
