Me gusta Colombiana, me gustas tu
I just got back from an amazing concert by Manu Chao at Stubbs. Lucia got an extra ticket and asked me if I wanted to buy it. The tickets were selling for $70-150 on craigslist so I was thinking of not going.

SXSW 2007
SXSW festival is back. We’ve been going to the SXSW concerts for the past few years. Molotov, Plastilina Mosh, Andrea Echeverri, Control Machete, Jumbo, are just a few of the many bands that I’ve got to see.
This year I went to see the wednesday show at Opal Divines with a good performance by La Gusana Ciega. But the band I was really looking forward this year was Los Abandoned.
I saw this band for the first time when they performed with Molotov at Stubbs back in 2005 and I really liked them. Since then I’ve been following them and I’ve been wanting to buy their album.
Los Abandoned performed last night at Bar Rio and they put a great show. I took some pictures and even recorded a small video and some live audio that I’ll share later.
After the show the band members hanged with the crowd. I approached Lady P and had a short conversation with her and took a couple of pictures with her. She was really cool. I also asked Vira Lata (bass player) if they brought some albums for sale and he told me that they forgot but that I could get it from Waterloo Records. I know this album has been on iTunes Music Store for a while, but I want to have a physical copy of the CD.
After Los Abandoned, the Instituto Mexicano De Sonido performed with Alejandro Rosso from Plastilina Mosh. They put a great show with lots of energy. Pretty cool!
Tonight there are several options of bands to see like The Presidents of the USA, Bowling for Soup or Balkan Beat Box.
The Shins at Bee Cave!
The Shins concert at the Backyard was amazing. I only started listening to them a few weeks ago when I was invited to the concert but I must say that I’ve become a fan. You have to see their videos at their website, specially the Interview 2003 one, its really funny.
What really made the night was when they played ‘Breathe’ from Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album.
Requiem
Last night I went with Lucia to see an amazing show called Requiem perfomed on an abandoned building that Intel was building a few years ago, but never finished it.
The show is very beautiful and dramatic and it has great music and lights. I highly recommend seeing it. I think tonight is your last chance to see it.
Lets get Kinky!
Last night Kinky performed at Emo’s (on 6th St). They have a really good show and their electro-lounge-funk style makes you wanna dance all night.
The best part is that before the concert the organizers announced that Jumbo was going to be playing on Nov 2nd and they told the crawd that whoever knew the name of 3 songs of Jumbo was going to get free tickets for that concert. I was a bit far from the stage and I thought that the question was really easy and someone was going to answer it right away, so I didn’t bother going there. But after a few minutes and seeing that apparently no one knew the answer, my friend Lucia dragged me to the stage where I told them the first three songs that came to my mind (siento que, super-acido, monotransistor) and they gave me 2 tickets for the concert. Of course I’m taking Lucia to the concert because she was the one that dragged me over there.
Confesiones de un ex-fan de Maná¡
Hoy voy a confesar algo que me causa verguenza contar, pero que igual lo comparto con mis lectores para que vean que el errar es humano:
Confieso que a la edad de los 13 o 14 años fui con mi hermanita y sus amigas a un concierto de Maná. Fué mi primer gran concierto y en su época lo gocé mucho. También confieso que en las fiestas poníamos Me Vale y poguiábamos esa canción como si se tratara de Smells like teen spirit… confieso que me gustaba Maná… y me averguenzo completamente de ello.
Pero todo esto es parte de un avergonzante pasado. Hoy digo con orgullo: ODIO A MANÁ!
No los soporto. Escuchar una de sus canciones me produce arcada. En Austin existe una emisora dedicada al pop en español (104.9) y le decimos ‘Radio Maná’ pues pone canciones de Maná frecuentemente. La emisora es un asco. Ellos participaron en la organización del concierto de Café Tacvba en el show de TV Austin City Limits y recuerdo que uno de los organizadores cuando estaba haciendo la fila para el concierto me llamó a un lado, y me señaló una van que se encontraba estacionada a unos 50 metros de la cual estaban saliendo unos 5 muchachos con pinta de músicos y me preguntó: “Esos son Café Tacvba?” y yo lo miré con cara de: “Eres un imbecil! Ni siquiera sabes como son los Tacvbos” (para mí la mejor banda de Rock mexicano y top 5 en el rock en español en general), pero muy amablemente le respondí “No, esos no son”. Que tristeza, este señor probablemente si hubiera distinguido a Fher o a Alex.
Maná es un asco, tocan un estilo de música desabrido, repetitivo, con patéticas letras y melodías.
Lo que más tristeza me da es que Maná tiene una muy buena maquinaria de marketing y promoción con la cual han logrado hacer crecer su popularidad. Me ha sucedido en varias ocasiones que amigos gringos me dicen que les gusta Maná. Yo simpre les digo que Maná es un porquería y les sugiero escuchar verdaderas bandas de rock en español (Soda Stereo, Café Tacvba, Aterciopelados, Héroes del Silencio, Los Tres, Molotov, Plastilina Mosh, por solo mencionar unas pocas)
Afortunadamente no estoy solo en esto.

Soda Stereo, Café Tacvba, Molotov, Aterciopelados, Los Tres, Charly GarcÃa, Fito Paez, Los Toreros Muertos, Los Prisioneros, Illya Kuriaky and the Valderramas, Plastilina Mosh, Jumbo, La Unión, Bersuit Vergarabat, La Mosca Tse Tse, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Los Enanitos Verdes, Los Amigos Invisibles, etc…
Summer Vacations ’06
This past weekend I went to Monterrey, Mexico with Marcos and Eva. We stayed for 4 days and we did lots of cultural activities including seeing a live concert of Gustavo Cerati, a performance by the argentinian group De La Guarda, visiting the Marco museum which had an exhibit of Ricardo Legorreta and the Museum of Mexican History, and going to the top of the ‘Obispado‘ where a huge mexican flag hangs.
Cerati’s concert was amazing. He played the entire new album (Ahà Vamos), some other songs from previous records and four songs from his former group Soda Stereo. Marcos posted the list of songs in his blog.
The performance by De La Guarda was a really pleasant surprise. I wasn’t really exited about going to the show, but I must say that I enjoyed it a lot. The show is like a mix of a theater play with a rave with a circus with a concert with the extra ingredient that the audience gets fully involved in the show. I don’t want to say much about the show because I think you should see it if you ever have a chance and I don’t want to spoil it for you giving lots of details.

I also enjoyed a lot Legorreta’s exhibit at the Marco museum. He is a fantastic architect and if I ever become a millionaire, I would like him to build me a house… but most likely I’m going to have to settle hiring my sister.

And I have to thank David (from the restaurant ‘Café Oasis’ located around Km 160 in the road Nuevo Laredo – Monterrey), Fernando (from the Hotel El Rancho located around Km 90) and Amador Garza (Director de Seguridad Pública Municipal of Vallecillo, Nuevo León).
They helped me recovering my immigration documents which I forgot at the Oasis Cafe when we made a quick stop there.
Ministry: from dance to industrial metal
A co-worker and friend of mine who is in his 40′s (and I’m guessing here) and who likes music from the 70′s and 80′s told me today that he likes Ministry. I was shocked since I know Ministry is a very hard core/industrial/metal band and there was no way for this guy to like it. I know it is not his style.
But then he showed me something that I would never have guessed: back in the 80′s Ministry was a dance/pop band! Similar to Duran Duran or Depeche Mode. Talk about changing your style!!!
Sample some of their early work from the album With Sympathy (1988) and compare it with one of their newer albums Rio Grande Blood (2006).
Fantástica Mujer

Nunca pensé que Fantástica Mujer fuera a causar el fenómeno que ha causado. Haber recibido tantos comentarios, la letra de la canción, la canción misma y que el propio Zimm Morris se haya puesto en contacto es algo que jamás estaba en mis planes. Ciertamente me hace muy feliz.

Y tengo una idea… descabellada y loca pero al fin de cuentas divertida: porque no hacer el video de Fantástica Mujer? propongo que hagamos una coleccion de videos de nuestra canción favorita. Ahí queda de tarea… yo ya tengo mis ideas… a ver si nos animamos.

Dedicado a las verdaderas fantásticas mujeres: Claritza y Yury Biviana.
Conocí el rock en español a finales de los 80′s y quedé impregnado para siempre con aquellas canciones que narraban meadas de 40 cervezas, bailes de los que sobran, novias pechugonas, sexo en un Sinca 1000, chicas cocodrilo, subi-dubi-dus, novios zombies, mil horas como un perro, parados sobre la muralla y músicas ligeras, solo para nombras algunas cuantas.
Mis colecciones musicales de la época se basaban en cassettes que grababa de la radio o de otros cassettes, y que escuchaba una y otra ves. Algunas canciones las he podido conseguir en CDs con recopilaciones, pero la mayoría de esa música problemente no volverá a ver la luz pública.
Sin embargo hubo una canción Fantástica Mujer, de Zimm Morris que me rehuso a que sea olvidada en el tiempo. Esta canción hizo parte de uno de mis cassettes y por eso tal ves la escuché bastante, al punto que hoy, más de 15 años después aún recuerdo algunas partes de la letra.
Mi intensión es entonces recuperar a la Fantástica Mujer.

Como ven, no tengo la letra completa. Mi esperanza es que exista alguien más en el mundo, que tenga mi misma preocupación y que considere importante preservar Fantástica Mujer para la posteridad.

Como dato extra, recuerdo que Zimm Morris fue uno de los artistas invitados en el Reinado Nacional de la Belleza en Cartagena, Colombia. El año debió ser entre 1986 y 1991.
